Volunteer with the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Reserve in China with the famous Giant Panda. The Wolong Nature Reserve is world famous for its conservation work with the Giant Panda. The program starts from the city of Chengdu.

Wolong Nature Reserve

The Wolong (translated as sleepy dragon) Nature Reserve, or sometimes known as "Wolong Giant Panda Reserve," is probably the most important giant panda reserve and at 785 square miles "Wolong Giant Panda Reserve is the largest giant panda reserve in the world. It is situated in the heart of the giant panda range. The Ministry of Forestry and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) formulated the long-term Giant Panda Management Plan up until 1989. The Wolong Giant Panda Reserve Center has been turned into the Giant Panda Breeding Center focusing primarily on continuing studies of artificial breeding in the hopes that they may successfully achieve live births of giant pandas which, after the cub reaches maturity, will be released into the forests.

You can volunteer from one to four weeks. Our program includes a pickup from the airport in Chengdu, one night in Chengdu, transport to The Wolong Nature Reserve.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Chengdu airport, you will be pickuped up from the airport and taken to your hotel, overnight in Chengdu.

Day 2: Transport to Chadianzi Bus Station for the long distance bus Chengdu - Wolong (143 km or about 3.5 hours), In Wolong you will check in the Wolong Panda Inn Hotel, then walk to Panda Garden for registering for your volunteering program, you will stay in the 2 stars Wolong Panda Inn Hotel during your volunteer program.

Day 3 to Day 6: Volunteering in Wolong Nature Reserve with the Pandas, overnight in Wolong Panda Inn Hotel including breakfast.

Volunteer activities:
- As an assistant of the panda keeper following a short training you will work with the Panda Keepers. This will involve the day to day running of the sanctuary. Activities may include the following :
* Clean the bedroom and the garden for the giant pandas.
* Prepare food, such as: carrot, apples, panda bread and biscuit. Plus of course bamboo.
* Help the scientists to collect the behavior data.

Other activities may include :
* Introduce the giant panda research cooperation with the USA, Japan, Austria, Thailand etc
* Introduce all the giant pandas, their different habit, behavior etc.
* Tell stories of the giant panda for the visiting Chinese and international tourists.

Day 7: End of your program, check out of the hotel. You can take the same train back to Chengdu according to your travel plans.

The prices are based on 2 persons sharing a room, single supplement is 145 US$ per person.

Included in the price: 2 stars hotel with breakfast, transportation from airport to hotel in Chengdu and to Chadianzi Bus Station at the start of your program, bus trip Chengdu-Wolong one way, volunteer coordination fee, local assistant at the reserve, volunteering fee, voluntary certificate
Excluded: volunteering clothing rental (20 US$ per week), lunch and dinner, entrance fee for Panda Garden (one time 10 US$)
